Stranded! Far from home...

Well, yes that is an exaggeration, more of an excuse for me to quote the Saints than anything else.
Anyway, at this time we were intending on being on a large aircraft jetting our way to the land girt by sea, instead I am back in the internet cafe in sunny Banglamphu, Bangkok. Apparently it is school holidays in Australia and we were unable to change our flight dates. This means we will be here for three extra days and should be arriving home around midnight on Friday 30th. This a bit of a shame because we were both pretty much ready to leave, it has been 8 months after all...
Anyway, nothing else to report from here, I've bought load of cheap knock-offs and will be so fashionable when I return you will hardly recognise me.
Off to buy a book now so I can resist the capitalist urge to shop some more.

A bad day.

Yesterday I had a bad day.
My therapist thinks it best if I tell you all about it.
It all started the night before...

We were coming home from having a nice dinner and a few modestly priced beers, it is a short walk back along the main street to where we are staying. On the way home we happened to see one of a pack of mongrels that had been bothering Marika on the beach that day. As we passed previously mentioned mongrel I pointed him out to Marika, nothing more, just pointed him out. Well, then this bastard started to follow us. I think it worried Marika a little but I had consumed a few beers and didn't let it bother me. We arrived home safely and began to watch some TV. After a while we heard a strange noise out on our balcony, we went outside to check it out and this stinking mongrel was sitting out on the chair outside our room. Well, I fairly swiftly and with little politeness forced him to leave. All was well, or so we thought...

So, the next day we arose at our usual time to go and eat some breakfast by the beach. When we got up to go and eat I happened to realise that on the front porch there was the following. Marika's thongs (2 of), Khan's thongs (2 of), Khan's Converse (1 of). Hang on! 1 shoe? That's not normal is it?
So this mongrel has had the last laugh in our little run-in and has run-off with my freakin shoe!
I walked around for ten to fifteen minutes looking like some kind of madman, dazed with sleep in my eyes and one shoe in my hand. Some kindly German tourists took pity in me and told me that they had seen the culprit running off in the direction of the street with the shoe the night before. We walked up and down but to no avail. The shoe was gone.
What a mongrel.

Oh, also I crashed the scooter (what a cliche) and grazed Marika and myself as well as doing 3000 baht damage.

What a shitty day.

But things are looking up...

Australia, see you in a few days.

A long way from Berlin...

Hiya...
Sorry no updates for quite a while...we've been busy lying on the beach trying to get a tan and getting sunburnt instead...

So we're in Koh Samui right now, have been for the past erm...8 days...before that we were in Bangkok, smack bang in the middle of the celebrations for their king whose been on the throne for the past 60 years...they love their king in Thailand. They see him as a great leader as he's always helping the people and not meddling in the politics...fwe were there for the 5 day holiday for him when all the dignitries came to visit, unfortunately this meant that the day we made the trek to the Wat(temple) next to the old palace we couldn't actually get into the palace as their was important people staying there...We'll get to see it when we go back i guess...

So yeah...erm, in Bangkok we got the old run around by a tuk tuk driver but we didn't have anything to do anyway so it wasn't too bad, since then, we learn you say no stops! before you get in...spent a couple of days there wandering the streets eating cheap pad thai 30 baht for a plate (that's a bout a dollar) and killing time before we made it to the beach...

Koh Samui is kind of like a little bangkok, just with lots more scooters, more beaches and lots more sunburnt foreigners.

We went kayaking and snorkelling out at a nearby marine park yesterday which is probably the most energetic thing we've done whilst in Thailand.

Got to run now...
Looking to get home on the 28th of June now...soon soon...
Any last minute shopping requests? send them through!

Primavera part II + III, beach and Berlin

Hey ho, it's a few days late but here is installment II and III on the Primavera Sound festival.
Day two was better attended than the first day but still nowhere near as crazy as I was expecting, a few more stages were open and some more big names graced our presence. We arrived a little later and managed to catch another Australian, Mick Harvey, who wooed the Spanish audience with a bunch of originals as well as some covers of aussie classics (some of which I am embarrassed to say I didn't know!). After Mick we caught a bit of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs who we had seen a few weeks earlier at Coachella. While in Spain we managed to add to our repotoire "two falafel please" in Spanish which kind of dictated the snacks we ate the whole time. Later that night we also saw in no particular order Sleater-Kinney, Richard Hawley, Dinosaur Junior and the Flaming Lips. The latter went on at 2:15am and definitely stole the show with a stage performance complete with confetti, streamer guns, huge balloons and torch wielding santa claus' and aliens. We were both nearly falling asleep before they came on but their enthusiasm and stage props soon woke us up.

Day three rolled around and we were both buggered from the days before it so we planned to only stick around for a short while. First up was Shellac who played at an indoor auditorium where the crowd was seated (at first) in plush adult contemporary style chairs. We were both eagerly anticipating this show and they didn't disappoint, playing for an hour and a half with questions from the audience in between songs. They were great. After Shellac it was all the way over to the other side of the grounds to see Deerhoof. There wasn't so many people there as Lou Reed was playing at the same time so we managed to sit quite close to the stage for the first half of the performance, I thought they were really good but I think Marika wasn't too impressed with them. We were supposed to be seeing the Television Personalities as well this evening but they had pulled out at the last moment which was pretty disappointing. We went and caught the last bit of Lou Reeds set but I thought he absolutely tortured 'Heroin' and I wasn't prepared to stay around and have him ruin any more V.U. classics so we left...probably to eat more falafel. I had wanted to stay around to see Mogawai and the Boredoms but we were really tired and as they weren't playing till 2:30 and 3:00am it meant many hours of sitting and waiting and that wasn't terribly appealing to either of us old folk so we went home to bed.
Last day in Barcelona, I had been hanging out to go to the beach so we walked down to Barcelonetta where the local 'beach' is. It was actually pretty nice, clean water and all just one of those beaches with rocks and an obviously man-made feel to it. I did feel pretty out of place here, not only because I was the only chubby white boy on the beach (everyone else was gorgeous with full body tans) but because I actually went swimming. The beach had not a spare inch of sand to sit on but in all honesty there was about 7 people actually in the water. Oh well, they do have nice tans.
So now we are in Berlin, staying in a Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy themed hostel (all the hostels in the area seem to have a theme of some kind) which is a dream come true for a nerd like me. We did a bike tour of the city today which was cool, tomorrow we will go and visit a few of the sites we saw today in a little more detail.
Off to Thailand on friday, will stay in Bangkok for three or four days to do some shopping (one pair of sneakers and two pairs of pants, I am in need of new clothes!). If anyone has any suggestions for a nice beachside retreat where we can go after that they would be greatly appreciated.
Smell you later.

Primavera Part I

After around six and a half months of suggestion from Marika that I write on the blog it happens today.
Last night and early this morning we had the first day of the three day long Primavera Sound festival, it seemed to be a warm-up day as only half of the stages were running and the attendance was a lot lower than we had expected. Even so the lineup was amazing and the venue is indeed something to behold. The night started off with a performance by the Drones, I haven't seen such a drunk man sing and play guitar in a long time but the pretty much blew me away. Marika and I had both seen them play once before in Melbourne and hadn't cared for them too much, well perhaps it was a little 'Aussie Pride' due to being away for so long but this time they rocked us.

After the Drones played a somewhat self indulgent 30 min set-ender it was time for Motorhead. they were pretty funny. They sounded as huge as you would imagine, with all the cliched metal moves and crowd jeers. Highlight was when they played R.A.M.O.N.E.S. as I was rushing back from the toilet.
Next up was Why? who might have been the most impressive of the whole night. They are a three piece band these days with one hell of a multi-percussionist (left hand side of the photo) who was a stage show in himself. The crowd loved it and sung along as best they could.

After a few pieces of pizza and and some coffe 2:15am rolled around, along with it came Yo La Tengo. Well the crowd went absolutley nuts, most of them knowing the words to all the tunes they played. We were right up the front for the first few tunes but it got pretty intensly crowded and extremely smoky. Marika and I are still recovering from some flu that went around our tour bus a week ago so the cigarette smoke was pretty nasty. We enjoyed the rest of the set from a little further back but we still had a pretty good view.

All in all a very enjoyable evening, made it back to the hostel by 4:15am.
Now we are off to do it all again tonight. The Flaming Lips, Dinosaur Junior and Sleater Kinney should all be good times.
Will report back again soon.
Hope all are well and looking forward to being home soon.
